Ibn Majid and the Maldives: What He Knew, and What the Tradition Knew

Ahmad ibn Majid possessed a professional, not a tourist’s, knowledge of the Maldive Islands. He wrote as a muʿallim,a master pilot, who had inherited Gulf and Indian Ocean lore and then tested it at sea. In the Kitab al-Fawaʾid fi usul ʿilm al-bahr wa-l-qawaʿid, finished about 1489–90, the Maldives appear as a navigational problem:
latitude, reef, monsoon window, and the run toward Southeast Asia. That is already a great deal. It is not the same thing as a full chart of every atoll or a portrait of island society. Those richer pictures belong to Sulayman al-Mahri, to Ibn Battuta, and to the older merchant books. The honest way to read Majid is to keep those layers distinct.
1. Geography of the atolls
Ibn Majid treated the archipelago as a long north–south field of islands on the highway between western India and the deep ocean. In G. R. Tibbetts’s translation of the Fawaʾid, the relevant section sits under measurements for the Maldives and Southeast Asia, taken by the Farqadan (the two “Guardians,” β and γ Ursae Minoris), not under the Pole-Star tables used for the Gulf and Gujarat.
That choice of star is the most important geographical fact in his book. By the time a ship is among the Maldives, Polarisal-Jah-is low or gone. A pilot who kept measuring it as if he were off Ras al-Hadd would be using the wrong sky. Majid’s “precision” here is the precision of a man who knows when to change instruments of the heavens.
He did not, in the surviving Fawaʾid, lay out a modern rutter of Huvadhu, Fuvahmulah, and Addu by those later names. Later writers and local memory sometimes read those names back into him. What he did give was the kind of knowledge that makes such names usable: how high the southern stars stand, how a chain of low islands sits on a latitude, how a ship must not treat coral as open sea. Sulayman al-Mahri, a generation later, is clearer still. His ʿUmda and Minhaj give the Dhīb islands their own chapter and plot runs such as Diu to the Maldives and Dabul to the Maldives, in zām and majra. If Majid opened the file, Mahri indexed it.

The kamal,a small tablet and a knotted cord,belongs to this same geometry. Hold the cord in the teeth, set the lower edge on the horizon and the upper edge on the star, read the knot. Prinsep would still see that gesture on a Maldive ship in Calcutta in 1836. The instrument is older than the plate; the plate is how Europe learned the arithmetic.
2. The maalimees
Ibn Majid respected earlier pilots. He named the lost “three lions” of the eleventh century and said they were compilers more than captains. He also assumed what every atoll sailor knows: a stranger does not enter the rings without a local man. Ibn Battuta had said the same in 1343. Majid’s whole craft,star compass, lunar mansions (manazil), rhumbs (akhnan)is the Arabic codification of a shared Indian Ocean sky. Maldivian maalimees worked on that foundation because the sky over Male is the same sky over Shihr and Julfar. Alignment on rising and setting stars in a dark ocean is not an Arab monopoly. It is the common grammar of the basin.

What Majid “traced back to ancient South Asian and islander techniques” is best put modestly. He stood in a mixed tradition: Gulf, Yemeni, Indian, island. He wrote it in Arabic and made it teachable. He did not invent the maalimee. He wrote the textbook the maalimee could still use when the monsoon turned.
3. Seasonal traders and the monsoons
As a working navigator, Majid understood the mawsim,the season,as the engine of the ocean. Southwest and northeast winds moved ships from East Africa and the Gulf toward India and beyond, then home again. The Maldives sat on that beat: a place you pass, a place you wait, a place you must not miss in the dark.
The modern Dhivehi pair Iruvai and Hulhangu names those winds in island speech. Majid wrote in Arabic of mawasim. The match is real in nature, not always in vocabulary. Likewise cowries, dried tuna, and coir,the rope that sewed dhow planks,were the islands’ classic exports, and glazed ware and cloth were what the seasonal ships brought. Those facts are securely in Sulayman, in the ninth- and tenth-century merchant notices, and in Battuta. They are the economy that made Majid’s latitudes worth knowing. They are not a separate ethnographic chapter in the Fawaʾid.
The Maldives were a restocking and routing haven because of that trade. Coir and cowries explain why a Gulf pilot bothered to get the Farqadan right. The book is a rutter. The cargo is why the rutter paid.
What to keep, and what to qualify
Keep this: Ibn Majid saw the Maldives as a strategic bar of islands on the seasonal road, measured them when Polaris failed, and wrote a method that island captains still recognized centuries later.
Qualify this: he was not the first man to know the atolls, he did not publish a complete modern chart of every southern atoll under today’s names, and he did not write Battuta’s account of courts, cowries, and conversion. His honour is narrower and higher. He told a ship how to find the rings. The maalimee still had to take her in.
