The Maldives played a crucial role as a major trading hub in the Indian Ocean, functioning as the "bridge" that Thor Heyerdahl envisioned linking sun-worshipping mariners to Easter Island.

The archipelago sits astride monsoon routes between South Asia, the Middle East, East Africa, and Southeast Asia. That geography made it a waypoint for sailors, cowrie-shell currency, and cultural exchange for at least two millennia. Heyerdahl’s 1980s excavations and 1986 book The Maldives Mystery went much further. He treated the islands as a central hub for an ancient, globe-spanning seafaring civilization,the same kind of people he had earlier placed on Easter Island ( Raafaanu Jazeera) and connected to South America via reed boats. Mainstream archaeology and genetics do not support that grand narrative, though they do confirm the Maldives’ importance inside the Indian Ocean world.
Heyerdahl’s Maldives story
Heyerdahl rejected the idea of isolated atolls. He argued the islands were settled by an advanced, sun-worshipping people he identified with Maldivian folklore about the Redin: tall, fair-haired (or pale-skinned) builders (Yavana Greco-Roman traders) who arrived before the official conversion to Islam in 1153 CE. He linked them to Indus Valley or Mesopotamian origins and saw them as part of a single prehistoric maritime network.
On islands such as Fuvahmulah and sites in Gaafu Dhaalu Atoll he excavated hawittas,mounds that locals associated with the Redin. He claimed the stonework, sun-disc motifs, lion carvings, and stepped forms predated Buddhism and showed architectural kinship with Hindu, Mesopotamian, and even Mediterranean traditions. In his wider theory these structures paralleled South American step pyramids and Easter Island masonry. All, he believed, were products of the same long-eared, sun-oriented “Caucasian” navigators who also reached the Americas.

His own expedition archaeologist, Arne Skjølsvold, and later researchers interpreted the same mounds differently: they are Buddhist stupas and monastery remains, consistent with material from India and Sri Lanka and dating mainly from the early centuries CE into the medieval period. Lion imagery and related motifs fit South Asian Buddhist and Hindu iconography rather than a lost pre-Buddhist solar cult., ignored earlier work by H.C.P. Bell, and fitted Maldivian sites into a pre-existing hyperdiffusionist framework that already included Kon-Tiki and the Ra expeditions.
What settlement and genetics actually show
Written sources, linguistics, and archaeology point to settlement from the Indian subcontinent and Sri Lanka beginning around 2,000–2,500 years ago. Dhivehi is closely related to Sinhala. Buddhism (with both Theravada and later Mahayana/Vajrayana elements) dominated until the 12th century. Successive layers of traders and settlers added Arab, Persian, and some African contacts after Islamization; the islands became famous for cowries used as currency across the Indian Ocean.
The 2013 study by Pijpe et al., “Indian Ocean Crossroads,” analyzed autosomal, mitochondrial, and Y-chromosome markers from 141 unrelated Maldivians, 119 of them from six major settlements. Maternal lineages were overwhelmingly South Asian (estimated ~99 percent from a Central/South Asian reference). Paternal lineages also clustered with South Asia, with some West Asian-associated haplogroups (especially J2) that cannot be cleanly separated from South Asian sources. The authors found no significant Southeast Asian contribution and only subtle genetic substructure among atolls, plus evidence of independent male founder effects and historically reduced female-mediated gene flow consistent with matrilocal pattern.
A sample of 141 people from six islands cannot capture every isolated atoll or detect a highly diluted ancient lineage left by a small group of visitors thousands of years earlier. Founder effects on tiny islands can also make one family’s history look like a national story. Those are real limitations. Even so, the results align with language, oral history, and the archaeological record: the core population derives from South Asia, with later male-biased admixture from the west and no clear genetic signature of a large Southeast Asian or “Redin” founding wave.
Connections that exist,and those that do not
Simulations of downwind sailing show that vessels traveling from Sumatra or India/Sri Lanka toward Madagascar could have used the Maldives for resupply. Some scholars have proposed Austronesian stopovers on the way to Madagascar (settled mainly in the second half of the first millennium CE by people from Borneo with later East African admixture). Boat-building details and scattered cultural traits have been cited as possible traces. Genetics, however, do not show a Southeast Asian component in modern Maldivians, and Malagasy genomes do not point specifically to the Maldives as a source population. Direct or Comoros-mediated routes from Island Southeast Asia remain more parsimonious. Trade with the Swahili coast is historically attested; limited African ancestry is possible but not a dominant layer.
The Maldives functioned as a trading and cultural platform inside the Indian Ocean,connecting South Asia to Arabia, East Africa, and, more marginally, the routes that eventually reached Madagascar. That is a substantial historical role. It is not evidence for a single prehistoric race of sun-worshipping megalith builders who used the atolls as a stepping-stone to Easter Island and the Americas. Folklore about the Redin most likely preserves memories of early South Asian Buddhist or pre-Islamic settlers rather than a lost Caucasian high civilization. Larger, denser genomic sampling across more atolls could refine the picture of minor or ancient admixture, but it is unlikely to resurrect Heyerdahl’s unified oceanic narrative
